We have therefore been able to draw on the help and advice of many experts, including patients and</span></div><div><span style="font-size: 8pt;">carers, haematologists, paediatricians, nurses, counsellors, psychologists, nursing education specialists, members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) and others – all have given up many hours to attend meetings and provide comments on these competences.&nbsp;</span></div><div><span style="font-size: 8pt;"><br /></span></div><div><span style="font-size: 8pt;">The aim of these competences is to:&nbsp;</span></div><div><span style="font-size: 8pt;">● improve nursing care for patients with sickle cell and thalassaemia, and hence improve the lives of their carers and families</span></div><div><span style="font-size: 8pt;">● provide a training framework for nurses wishing to specialise in sickle cell disease and thalassaemia care so that they are encouraged to specialise and stay longer in this area.</span></div>
