Summary, etc. | Streetwise is a classroom-based, interactive resource for 11 to 16-year-old students. The resource aims to present a balanced picture of how and why people drink alcohol. It acknowledges that alcohol is not necessarily 'bad', but that it can have serious and harmful effects when misused. Streetwise follows a harm-minimisation approach and seeks to develop students' knowledge skills and abilities to minimise the harm associated with alcohol misuse. The program includes learning strategies which simulate real life, acknowledging that choices about alcohol use are complex. The materials are designed to be used in lessons covering personal, social or health education citizenship or science. The streetwise CD-ROM contains: The Streets, an interactive town for students to explore. Each location provides key information about why people drink alcohol and how it affects them, the law relating to alcohol, and how to avoid alcohol-related harm. The Subject Zone, information about what alcohol is, why people drink it, how it affects people, and the alcohol laws in the UK, plus interactive challenges, worksheets and quizzes. The Subject Zone has two levels, aimed at students aged 11-14 and 14-16. Teachers Notes, a guide to using Streetwise in the classroom plus lesson plans and curriculum links for England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. |
