Summary: This study arose from the researcher's idea that some patients dying of non-malignant disease experienced distressing symptoms that were not recognized, addressed seriously or adequately relieved. A review of the literature on symptom distress, particularly in relation to the dying, the elderly and non-malignant disease follows.
