It is effective from 1 January 2013 and replaces the Midwivesrules and standards (NMC, 2004 and 2010) together with the Standards for thesupervised practice of midwives (NMC, 2007). It sets out, under the relevantrule, any standards for the exercise by the local supervising authorities oftheir supervisory role (‘LSA standards’, established under article 43(3) of theNursing and Midwifery Order 2001 (the Order) SI 2002/253) and any standardsrelating to the conduct, performance and ethics which apply to midwives(‘Midwife standards’, established under article 21(1) of the Order).The lattersupplement the standards set out in The code: Standards of conduct, performanceand ethics for nurses and midwives(NMC, 2008) and other standards documentsthat may be issued from time to time. The document also provides, under therelevant rule, guidance to local supervising authorities on exercising theirfunctions (given under article 43(3) of the Order), which reflects what theCouncil considers best practice.&nbsp;</span></span></p>
