Contents:
1 Cell architecture -- 2 DNA & RNA & associated proteins -- 3 Transcription and translation -- 4 Regulation of gene expression -- 5 Membranes and intracellular transport -- 6 Signalling -- 7 Cell cycle -- 8 Immunology -- 9 Cancer.
Summary: This book introduces the basics of cellular and molecular biology on a basic level including detailed explanations and examples. It lays the foundation for a systematic understanding of biology, which is essential in order to handle big data in biomedical research. Comprehension of what is measured, how it is measured and how to interpret results is a precondition for the development of novel therapies against diseases. Interdisciplinary research benefits from versatile approaches to generate and test hypotheses, which may lead to new discoveries. Therefore, it requires a new generation of biologists from diverse backgrounds - and they need this introduction. This book helps students and experts from e.g. computer science, informatics, mathematics, physics, and related fields or even if you are in sales and marketing and want to have a better understanding of the biology behind certain products. The Author Lorenz Adlung is an independent junior group leader for systems immunology at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Germany. He obtained his PhD in systems biology from Heidelberg University and the German Cancer Research Center. Lorenz received his postdoctoral training at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel. His original research articles are published in Journals like Molecular Systems Biology, and Cell. He won prestigious prizes e.g., the Young Investigators Award from the Gips Schle Stiftung and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Individual Fellowship from the European Union. Lorenz is an advocate of interdisciplinary, free and open science. He gave a TEDx talk on the matter and loves scientific outreach.
